Raising Decent Human Beings A Child Care Providers Perspective

July 27, 2026

As a childcare provider, I’ve had the privilege of spending my days with children at their most curious, honest, and impressionable stages of life. Every giggle, every meltdown, every “why?”, every “A-HA” moment offers a glimpse into who they’re becoming — and it reminds me daily that my job is about so much more than teaching ABCs or cleaning up snack time. It’s about helping raise decent human beings.

Character Over Perfection

Parents often worry about milestones — crawling, walking, talking, knowing their colors, shapes, letters, numbers, reading by a certain age, mastering math facts, tying shoes just so. But what I’ve learned over the years is that how a child treats others matters far more than how fast they meet those benchmarks. A child who can share a toy, say “I’m sorry” and mean it, or stand up for a friend is developing the kind of character that carries them through life far more than any test score ever will. At the end of the day, I want the children in my care to leave not just smarter — but kinder, braver, and more empathetic.

Modeling Matters

Children watch everything. How we speak to them, how we handle frustration, how we treat the people around us — those lessons sink-in deeper than any lecture ever could. When I take a deep breath instead of snapping in frustration, when I say, “thank you” to a coworker, or when I admit, “I made a mistake,” I’m showing them that kindness, patience, and humility are choices we make every day.

Teaching Through the Little Moments

Sometimes the best lessons come in the smallest interactions:

  • When two children argue over a toy, it’s an opportunity to talk about sharing and fairness.
  • When someone spills juice, it’s a chance to teach responsibility and teamwork as we clean up together.
  • When a child comforts a friend who’s sad, I point it out — “That was really thoughtful of you.”

Positive reinforcement plants seeds for lifelong empathy.

The Bigger Picture

Being “decent” doesn’t mean being perfect. It means being aware of others, showing compassion, taking responsibility, and learning from mistakes. As adults — parents, teachers, caregivers — we’re helping children build that foundation brick by brick.

We live in a world that can feel hurried, competitive, and sometimes unkind. But every day in our classrooms and homes, we have the chance to nurture something different — children who grow up valuing kindness, fairness, and integrity. If we focus on raising decent human beings, children who are not only smart, but good. Children who speak up for what’s right. Children who include, who forgive, who care. The rest will follow. Because at the end of the day, that is what the world truly needs.

Summary

This blog post emphasizes the importance of raising children to be decent human beings by focusing on character development, modeling positive behavior, and teaching through everyday interactions. It encourages parents and caregivers to prioritize kindness, empathy, and integrity over academic achievements and milestones.
